Avoid U.S. Visa Rejections: Key Mistakes & Tips | Aprion

Every year many people in the United States have their visa applications turned down due, to errors. Visa officers look at each application carefully but some issues keep popping up during interviews. These issues are often the ones that cause problems.Knowing about these mistakes can help you get ready and avoid issues during your visa interview. It also helps to understand what visa officers are looking for.Common mistakes are often easy to fix.

1. Providing Inconsistent Information

When you apply for something all the details you give must match. If your application and what you say in an interview do not match you will probably be rejected.

  • The problem is when you write one thing on your DS-160 form like a travel date or where you are going. Then you say something different when you talk to someone in person.
  • To avoid this problem you should look over your DS-160 form again the day before your interview. Make sure you remember things like who your employer is, where you will be staying and when you are traveling so that what you say in the interview is the same as what you wrote on your DS-160 form. This way your application and interview will. You will not have any problems, with inconsistent information.

2. Unclear Purpose of Travel

Consular officers need to understand why you are going to the U.S. And why this specific visa category is right for your trip. The Mistake: Giving answers like "I want to explore America" or "I am looking for opportunities." These kinds of answers make officers think you might be hiding something like trying to find a job on a tourist visa.

The Fix: Be clear about your plans. Say what you will do:

  • I will spend 10 days in New York to see the Statue of Liberty and Times Square.
  • I am going to a 3-day tech conference in San Francisco, for my company.
  • You need to make it clear what you will do in the U.S.. Why you chose that visa category.

3. Weak Ties, to Your Home Country

When applying U.S. Officers think you might want to stay. You need to show you have reasons to go back home.

  • The Mistake: Not showing connections. If you do not have a job just finished school with no plans or have no family or money responsibilities your application seems risky.
  • The Fix: Talk clearly about what keeps you at home. Confidently mention your ongoing business, a long-term job contract, managing properties or family members who need you.

4. Financial Concerns

You need to show that you have money to pay for your whole trip to the United States without having to look for a job that you are not supposed to have.

  • The mistake people make is when they show a bank account that got a lot of money all of a sudden and they cannot explain where it came from or when they say they earn an amount of money but it is not enough to pay for flights and hotels in the United States.
  • The fix for this problem is to make sure your bank account looks normal and steady over time. You should be ready to show your tax returns, like the ITRs that people from India have to fill out and you should also have bank statements from the six months that show how much money you normally earn and save and that is what Financial Concerns like these are all about so you need to be careful, with your Financial Concerns.

5. Giving Memorized or Rehearsed Answers

While getting ready is important sounding like you are reading from a paper can make people doubt you.

  • The Mistake: Going through a planned speech too fast or using very formal language that does not sound real. If an officer asks you another question and you get stuck it shows that your story might not be true.
  • The Fix: Make the interview feel like a talk, with a colleague. Listen carefully to what the officer's asking take a moment to think and answer in a natural way. It is okay to speak in simple sentences.

6. Providing False Information

This is the mistake someone who wants to apply can make. If you try to fool an officer you will have big problems, not just a simple no.

  • The Mistake: Giving employment letters making up bank statements or not telling them about previous visa rejections from the United States or other countries.
  • The Fix: Always tell the truth. The United States has good systems to check information and officers always verify documents. If you get rejected because you do not have ties to your home country you might be able to try again later but if you get rejected for lying you might never be allowed to enter the United States again and this can be a permanent ban, from entering the United States.
