1.  What Is an Interview Waiver?

An interview waiver is a way for people who qualify to send in their application and passport by mail or by dropping it off at a place, like a VFS center. With this interview waiver they do not have to meet face‑to‑face with an officer.

2. Renewing the Same Visa Category

This is the basic rule. The Interview Waiver can only be used if you are applying for a visa that's in the same category as the visa you had before.

  • Example A (Eligible): You once held a B1/B2 visa for tourist or business travel. You now apply for another B1/B2 visa.
  • Example B (Not Eligible): You once held a student visa. After finishing studies you wish to obtain a B1/B2 visa, for tourist travel. This is a visa category so you must apply for the new category and attend an interview.

3. Previous. Age Requirements

Your previous visa must have been issued after you were 18 years old (, for B-visas).Your prior visa must have been issued for validity and cannot have been annotated with "Clearance Received" or "Waiver Granted."You must be applying in your country of nationality or residence.

4. Visa Expired Within the Allowed Timeframe

Interview waiver eligibility often depends on how your previous visa expired. In cases applicants can qualify if their visa expired within a certain number of months. This timeframe can change depending on policies.

5. No Previous Visa Refusals After the Last Visa

If you had a visa refusal after your approved visa you might not be eligible, for the interview waiver program. In those cases the consulate could ask you to come in for an interview.

6. Clean Immigration History & Applying in the Same Country

  • This criterion goes back to the discussion: How Travel History Impacts Your Visa Approval.
  • No Violations: Visa applicant must never have been deported, overstayed in the United States or worked illegally.
  • Applying from Your Home Country: In cases visa applicant must be physically present in the country of residence which is usually the home country, in order to use the Interview Waiver. If the visa applicant is a citizen of Country A yet lives in Country B on a work permit the rules might change. Typically visa applicant must apply for a U.S. Visa from the country that's the nationality or where long‑term residence exists.

7. Consulate May Still Request an Interview

I understand that you may feel stressed. The Consulate still has the authority to request an in-person Interview even after you have met all the requirements, for an interview waiver.
