If you have tried to schedule a visa interview lately you have probably seen a surprising message: no available times, until 2027. This is not a mistake—it is because of problems that have built up over time. Here is a simple explanation of what's really causing the delay.
1. The Backlog Spark ( 2025)
The crisis started in December 2025. Consular offices in India suddenly cancelled thousands of appointments that were set for the end of the year. At first these appointments were moved to 2026 but as the line grew the snowball effect began and all the available slots, for the whole of 2026 started to disappear. Backlog Spark is the name of this crisis.
2. New Social Media Vetting
This is the biggest speed bump.
- On December 15 2025 the Department of State (DOS) began Online Presence Reviews for H-1B and H-4 applicants.
- The Burden: Consular officers now have to check an applicants media and professional networking history for the last five years.
- The Result: Because this vetting takes a lot of time consulates have had to cut their interview numbers. If consular officers could previously handle twenty interviews a day consular officers may now only have time, for ten.
3. Policy Changes: The "Third-Country" Ban"
Along with the schedule the DOS recently stopped Indian citizens from getting "third-country" stamping (for example going to Thailand or the UAE to get a quicker appointment). This has caused all the Indian H-1B applicants from around the world to go back, to the five Indian posts, which are already overwhelmed.
4. The Rescheduling Trap
- I have seen the system plagued by "repeated rescheduling". Many applicants who had March 2026 dates found those dates moved to October 2026 and into early 2027.
- I have seen many people face Retries": New rules limit applicants to only one rescheduling attempt. If you cannot make the date the government gives you your fee may expire, forcing you to start the process (and the wait), from scratch.
5. Policy Changes + High Demand = Perfect Storm
Several things happened at the time:
- Stricter visa policies and compliance checks
- Rising number of H-1B applicants from India
- Lingering backlog, from previous years
- Increased global travel demand
All of these together made a perfect storm. The system couldn’t keep up. It got overwhelmed. People waiting for visas faced delays. The process became harder for everyone involved. It wasn’t one thing. It was a mix of changes more people and old problems all hitting once.
6. Key Technical Advice for Applicants
If you are navigating this keep the following in mind:
- Public Profiles: Experts suggest that you set your social media profiles to "Public" for a period. This helps avoid inference and stops investigators from having to request access, which could cause extra delays.
- Slot Monitoring: Use automated alerts or a visa concierge service. Even though regular slots are listed as "NA" (Not Available), for 2026 occasional cancellations can appear. Keep an eye on the slot schedule.
- Fee Expiration: Check that your visa fee (MRV) is still valid. Fees usually last for one year. If your appointment moves to 2027 you might have to pay to keep your spot.
